Asian culture in the heart of Cardiff

If you ever found yourself caught in the middle of Chinese New Year, Moon festival or Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, it is probable that you have stumbled upon Yigou before. Situated in 110 Salisbury Road, a street famous for its pubs and take-away dedicated restaurants, Yigou Chinese Shop stands out for the shinning red front and the welcoming inside.

Entering Yigou is just like stepping in to a supermarket in China. The shelves are kept full with Chinese rice wines, instant noodles and all the ingredients you need to cook your favourite Asian dishes. Apart from food, in Yigou you can also find a variety of utility products like Wok pans; chop sticks or even Chinese bowls.

Michael Chang, current business owner, opened the store to the public back in 2011 with several other shareholders. In Wales since 2002, Mr. Chang presented the shop while doing the monthly finance account, attending costumers and taking care of his own 10 year old child playing frenetically on his tablet. Expanded recently at the fall of 2012, Yigou passed from being a small family business to a heavily reliable Chinese supermarket with a strong home delivery component.

Mr Chang said: “Usually 95 per cent of our customers are Chinese, but we also get a lot of curious people from the rest of the world eager to try Asian products and recipes.”  In Yigou, Instant noodle, Chinese fizzy drinks and dumplings fly from the shelves, being really popular among the Chinese community eager for the flavours from the home country.
